He will handle budget cuts.
Newly elected US President Donald Trump has appointed businessman Elon Musk as head of the new Department of Government Efficiency. He will deal with budget cuts and restructuring of federal agencies.
This is reported on Trump's page on the Х social network.
‘I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working together with American patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will head the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE),’ the winner of the presidential election wrote.
Trump added that together, ‘these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, reduce excessive regulation, cut wasteful spending and restructure federal agencies - essential to the Save America Movement.’
‘This will send a shockwave throughout the system and everyone involved in the system and everyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people!’, noted Elon Musk.
The post also notes that ‘the new department will be the potential Manhattan Project of our time.’
‘The Department of Government Efficiency will provide advice and guidance from outside the government, and work with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to implement wide-ranging structural reforms, as well as create an entrepreneurial approach to government management never before seen,’ the report said.
Trump added that the new department ‘must displace the massive waste and fraud that exists during our $6.5 trillion in annual government spending.’
Musk and Ramaswamy's work, according to Trump, should be completed no later than July 4, 2026.
‘A smaller Government, with greater efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift for America on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence,’ the newly elected US president added.
Who is Vivek Ramaswamy
Vivek Ramaswamy is an Indian-origin American entrepreneur, author and conservative political activist.
He studied at Harvard and became popular in right-wing circles with his best-selling book ‘Woke, Inc.’. It condemns the decisions of some large companies to launch a business strategy on issues of social justice and climate change.
During the campaign, Ramaswamy supported a state-level ban on abortion after six weeks and said he wants to significantly expand presidential powers and dissolve a large part of the federal government, including the FBI and the Department of Education.
The businessman ran for the Republican Party's nomination for US president but withdrew in favour of Trump in January 2024.
