Ukrainian tanks have abandoned their previous strategy.
The Russians are trying to break through to Pokrovsk, but to do so they must first capture Kurakhove, the 33rd Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine armed with Leopard 2A4 tanks is on guard there.
According to Forbes analyst David Axe, Russian forces attempted to break through on Monday to the village of Dalnje, south of Kurakhove. Still, accurate fire from the Leopard 2A4 quickly stopped the Russian advance.
“At least one Leopard 2A4 firing armor-piercing rounds shot holes through two Russian tanks, an armored personnel carrier and several other vehicles,” Axe writes.
As the analyst notes, in this battle, Ukrainian tanks have abandoned their “cautious strategy.”
With the proliferation of explosive drones that hunt for heavy armor, Russian and Ukrainian tanks often hide in the woods, emerging only to fire a few rounds at targets miles away, or occasionally to lead a desperate attack, like the Russian assault on Dalnje.
“The 33rd Mechanized Brigade’s up-armored Leopard 2A4s were anything but cautious on Monday. They fought close—and won. It helped the Ukrainian tankers that the Russian column was led by two “turtle tanks” fitted with bulky anti-drone armor that obscures the crews’ visibility and also prevents the tanks’ turrets from rotating,” Axe writes.
