Putin Sharply Reduces Payments For Those Wounded In War

This made up the bulk of Moscow's expenses for the war.

The Russian government, on the instructions of Vladimir Putin, has sharply reduced payments to those wounded in the war against Ukraine.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Russian government website.

Until today, the occupiers were paid 3 million rubles (about 100 thousand dollars) for any injury.

The Russian government has introduced a three-tier scale in which the amount of compensation depends on the severity of the injury.

The most seriously wounded will still receive 3 million rubles, which were previously guaranteed to all wounded soldiers, the document says. The payment for moderate injuries has been reduced to 1 million rubles, and for minor injuries — to 100 thousand rubles (1 thousand dollars).

As Bloomberg notes, Putin's relative and Deputy Defense Minister Anna Tsivileva raised the issue of how to distribute compensation more fairly earlier this month after visiting a hospital in Moscow and meeting with soldiers and doctors who voiced the idea.

Payments to the wounded are the largest part of Moscow's war expenses. According to the authors of the analytical platform War On The Rocks, as of May 2024, one-time payments will amount to 900 billion rubles for the wounded ($9 billion).

This data is based on information from France and Great Britain, according to which losses by May amounted to 400 thousand, of which more than 100 thousand died. Families of the deceased receive about 14 million rubles (for a Lada Kalina). Payments for the dead will amount to at least 1.4 trillion rubles. In total, the amount will reach 2.3 trillion rubles, which is 6% of the Russian budget for 2024.
