Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya has visited Ukraine for talks with government officials. The arrival of the first Japanese diplomat was not announced.
This was reported by the Japanese news agency Kyodo.
The head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry arrived in Ukraine after visiting Peru.
The Foreign Ministry of the Land of the Rising Sun said that this visit is apparently intended to “demonstrate Tokyo's commitment to Kyiv in its opposition to Russian military aggression, which now includes North Korean troops”.
The Japanese minister arrived by train from Poland. On Saturday, November 16, he is scheduled to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiha.
A representative of the Japanese ministry told Kyodo that Iwaya may hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later that day.
“The visit comes as Donald Trump's return to the White House following his win in the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election has cast a shadow over the prospects of financial aid to Ukraine from the Group of Seven industrialized nations,” the Japanese news agency reported.
