Borrell: EU Suspends Financial Aid To Georgian Government

€100 million will be used to support civil society organizations in Georgia.

EU High Representative Josep Borrell said that the European Union is suspending financial aid to the Georgian government and may direct the €100 million earmarked for this purpose to support civil society organizations. He said this before the start of the EU Council of Ministers in Brussels, Ukrinform reports.

“Today, everyone will discuss the situation in Georgia in order to make concrete decisions. I proposed to stop an important part of the programs related to (support for) the government. More than €100 million will be frozen and instead of being transferred to the authorities, will be used to support civil society organizations, to support them in the fight for fair elections. The people of Georgia will continue to receive assistance from the European Union,” Borrell said.

He also noted the need to investigate violations in the parliamentary elections in Georgia.
