Forbes: Ukrainian Tanks Near Kurakhove Fired At Russian Assault Troops At Point-Blank Range

A smoke screen tactic was used.

In Kurakhove, Donetsk region, Ukrainian tanks are moving towards Russian assault groups and firing at them at point-blank range. Forbes writes about this.

“Tanks from at least two Ukrainian brigades are fighting Russian assault groups at point-blank range — and are blowing smoke to escape the inevitable drone attacks,” the article reads.

The journalists specified that the tanks most likely belonged to the 46th Airmobile Brigade of the Armed Forcesof of Ukraine. They came face-to-face with Russian troops in the ruins of a bombed-out neighborhood, fired back, and then, under the cover of their smoke generators, raced away, barely dodging at least one Russian drone that flew over them.

According to analysts, the shoot-move-smoke tactic is effective.

“There are several Ukrainian battalions that I see using smoke very effectively, and they are suffering significantly fewer vehicle losses,” analyst Andrew Perpetua noted.

In addition, at least one Leopard 2 from the 33rd Mechanized Brigade destroyed a Russian assault group on November 12.

The journalists explained that Russian forces are trying to move through Kurakhovo to completely encircle Pokrovsk.

“If Pokrovsk falls, the entire Ukrainian front line in Donetsk could collapse,” the article reads.

The authors of the article emphasized that just a few weeks ago, tanks on both sides of the conflict rarely dared to directly attack enemy forces. Therefore, the fact that Ukrainian tanks are again fighting at close range indicates the urgency of this phase of the war.

At the same time, it may also indicate an improvement in Ukrainian tactics, since even the use of smoke for camouflage requires a lot of coordination between different units.

“However, the Ukrainians have no choice but to try. The defenders of Pokrovsk are counting on the defenders of Kurakhovo to stop – or at least slow down – the Russian offensive, which shows no signs of ending anytime soon,” the journalists concluded.
