Gintautas Paluckas Becomes New Prime Minister Of Lithuania

88 members of the Seimas voted in favour of the representative of the Social Democratic Party.

On Thursday, November 21, the Seimas of Lithuania voted in favour of appointing Gintautas Paluckas as the new prime minister.

This is reported by LRT.

Eighty-eight members of the Seimas voted in favour of Paluckas' candidacy, 34 voted against and six abstained.

Now he needs to present to the parliament a Cabinet of Ministers formed and approved by the president, as well as to submit for consideration a programme of government activities no later than 15 days after his appointment.

Paluckas is a representative of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, which together with the Union of Democrats ‘In the Name of Lithuania’ and ‘Dawn of Nemunas’ forms the ruling coalition.

Paluckas thanked for the ‘celebration of democracy’ after the vote.

‘I believe that there were still echoes of some pre-election battles during our discussions. I hope that soon they will subside and we will move on to the business agenda,’ he said.

Earlier in an interview with Nowdays TV channel, Paluckas supported the Belarusian diaspora in Lithuania.

‘I would like to remind you that we, as a state, have invited the Belarusians. We invited them, trying to create democratic and safe conditions for them to live, work and start business, after Mr Lukashenka once again - in quotes - ‘won’ the elections in Belarus. I personally would never say that the Belarusians who have come here are doing something bad. Especially since they really contribute to our economy and are participants of the labour market,’ said the politician.
