At the same time, as another source in the Armed Forces told NV, Ukraine is currently discussing with the United States the possibility of providing weapons capable of shooting down intercontinental missiles. This could involve upgrading the Patriot air defense system or receiving the American Aegis or THAAD missile defense system.
What is Aegis
The Aegis Combat System is an American global missile defense program designed to protect against short- and medium-range ballistic missiles. The arsenal includes SM-2 Block IV interceptor missiles, which are used to destroy ballistic missiles in the atmosphere at the final stage of flight, and SM-3 interceptor missiles, which destroy targets in the middle part of the flight and fly beyond the atmosphere. It is under the control of the Navy.
What is THAAD
THAAD is a mobile ground-based anti-ballistic missile system for high-altitude exoatmospheric interception of medium-range ballistic missiles. The PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement anti-missile can intercept targets at an altitude of up to 200 km at a speed of 3.5-4.8 km/sec. Such a complex costs about $3 billion.
