Due to Russian sabotage.
Russian sabotage against Western targets may lead to NATO considering invoking Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.
This opinion was expressed by the head of the German Federal Intelligence Agency (BND) Bruno Kahl, Reuters writes.
Kahl also noted that Russia's build-up of military potential means that "military confrontation with NATO is becoming one of the possible options for the Kremlin."
Reuters emphasizes that NATO and intelligence services indicate that Russia is behind sabotage, from cyberattacks to arson, in the Euro-Atlantic region, and the number of such actions is only growing. At the same time, Moscow denies the accusations against it.
Kahl also stated that by the end of the decade, the Russian military will most likely be capable of attacking NATO. The head of the BND also noted that Moscow has troops under its command with combat experience gained during the war against Ukraine. In addition, these are troops who have mastered modern methods of warfare.
Bruno Kahl also cited German intelligence estimates that the Russian leadership doubts that the alliance's Article 5 will be applied in an emergency.
“If such sentiments prevail in the government in Moscow, the risk of a military clash in the coming years will increase,” Reuters quotes the head of BND.
The head of German intelligence also expressed the opinion that if Russia attacks one or more NATO allies, it will not be for aggressive purposes, but to test the red lines set by the West to undermine Western unity.
Article 5 of the NATO treaty stipulates that if any of the member states of the Alliance becomes the victim of an armed attack, all other members of the Alliance, without exception, will consider this act of violence an armed attack against all of them and will take all measures they deem appropriate to help the member of the Alliance that has been attacked.
