Cyprus Announces Plans To Join NATO

This could set an important precedent.

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulidis said that his country intends to become a member of NATO and is negotiating with Washington on ways to join the alliance, DW writes.

According to him, Cyprus is discussing with the U.S. three proposed levels of membership of the Republic in the Alliance. He also noted that the fact that Cyprus cannot be a NATO member state because of Turkey's objections deprives the country's army of many opportunities to both modernise and acquire military hardware.

Christodoulidis cited as a key advantage of Cyprus the island's geographical position ‘in an area of special geostrategic importance’. Asked about the timing of a potential application for NATO membership, he said, ‘The less we talk about it, the closer we are to our goal.’

Cyprus' Admission to NATO is an Important Precedent

Under NATO rules, a state with unresolved territorial problems cannot be included. The Republic of Cyprus controls about 60% of the island of the same name, the rest of the territory of which is occupied by the unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Earlier, the media reported that the Cypriot president discussed a strategy for the country's gradual rapprochement with NATO at a meeting with US President Joe Biden. It is said that the detailed and elaborate plan is designed for a long-term period and consists of many interdependent stages.
