What should Ukraine expect from Trump's victory?
Republican Donald Trump was elected the 47th President of the United States, winning a convincing victory in the election. What to expect from the new head of the White House?
Charter97.org asked Oleksandr Musiyenko, a political expert and head of the Ukrainian Centre for Military and Legal Studies, for a commentary:
- If we see a victory not only in the Senate elections, but also in the Congress, i.e. the House of Representatives, which is very likely, it will be a sensation, because Donald Trump gets all the power. He gets both houses of Congress, he gets serious powers to put into practice the ideas and promises that he gave to the American people at the stage of the election campaign.
I can say that the sensation was how much the trends have changed and how much the American public now wants changes, except that they are not the changes proposed by the Democrats, but changes that will be related to domestic policy. It's economic issues, dealing with unemployment, inflation, migration and the war on drugs - the domestic agenda.
At the same time, they really want to assert specifically the leadership of the United States of America, because it's noticeable how China, Russia, North Korea, Iran and others are challenging the leadership of the United States. I think a lot of people don't like that. It indicates a major electoral revolution in the United States that has taken place. Now let's see how this extrapolates to the international arena as well, which is what most of us are interested in.
- What is expected in Ukraine from Trump in terms of foreign policy?
- The most expected and certainly positive and acceptable to us would be a policy and an agenda to support Ukraine's plan to win and to come to peace, to end the war through force, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated. It is important to understand - both the Ukrainian president, Ukraine as a state, and the United States as well as Donald Trump support bringing the wars to an end.
As Trump said, ‘my cadence will be without wars.’ Ukraine supports this, but we support an approach where the end of the war can be achieved through a scenario of force, through putting pressure on Russia. Putting pressure through additional arms deliveries and making appropriate decisions.
The most acceptable scenario for us is that the Trump administration will pursue a different policy and cross those red lines that the Democrats led by Biden did not want to cross. I mean, for example, strikes deep into Russian territory with Western weapons.
We expect precisely such steps that would eventually establish peace, which would be a just peace.
