It will take place in January.
The powers of the US president and vice president expire at noon on January 20, according to the 20th Amendment to the US Constitution. The term of office of the new president is counted from that moment.
The inauguration of the new US president will therefore take place on January 20, 2025.
The 20th Amendment to the US Constitution came into force in 1933, USA Today reminds. Until then, ceremonies were held on March 4, the anniversary of the entry into force of the US Constitution.
Republican Donald Trump won the recent US presidential election, securing his return to the White House after a four-year hiatus. Formally, the counting of results in individual states is still ongoing, but Trump has already received the necessary number of electoral votes to secure his victory.
