More than half of Puerto Ricans voted to join the United States as a state in a referendum on the island's status, according to local newspaper El Nuevo Día. 56.82% of Puerto Ricans voted for this after processing 91.35% of the votes.
30.85% voted for independence, and another 12.33% for maintaining the current status.

However, the Puerto Rican diaspora in the United States has the right to vote. The island has held several status referendums, in which residents voted for Puerto Rico to become the 51st state of the United States.
