The Wall Street Journal has reported on a plan to end the war in Ukraine that advisers are proposing to Donald Trump. The publication cites sources and claims that the plan is being discussed in the transitional administration of the elected president.
It includes freezing the current front line and declaring a demilitarised zone along it. At the same time, the newspaper notes that it is not clear who will ensure the security of this line, as one of the sources ruled out the use of US troops, UN contingents and other US-funded organisations.
At the same time, Ukraine will abandon its plans to join NATO for at least 20 years.
The US will continue to supply Ukraine with arms. An anonymous member of Trump's team told the WSJ that the US may train the military and provide other support, but these will be handled primarily by European countries.
‘We're not sending American men and women to keep the peace in Ukraine. And we're not paying for it. Ask the Poles, Germans, British and French to do it,’ the publication quotes the source as saying.
WSJ notes that this approach echoes the September statements of Vice President-elect Jay Dee Vance.
According to the newspaper, Trump received various proposals from advisers, but did not approve a specific plan. WSJ notes that factions with different views will vie for influence on the new policy of the new US president.
It should be noted that earlier the Russian Federation expressed its opposition to the scenario of ‘freezing’ the conflict.
