In the next few years.
The Telegraph reports that the US is planning to deploy nuclear weapons in the UK, which were removed from there more than 15 years ago, in 2008. These warheads will be deployed at the Royal Air Force base in Lakenheath due to the threat from Russia.
It is noted that a special place is already being built at the military base, about which little is known. The publication believes that it can be used to store tactical nuclear weapons worth several million dollars.
“Global power is changing, we are at the dawn of a third nuclear age. The security outlook is more contentious, more ambiguous and more dangerous than we have known in our careers. Nowhere is this more evident than in the nuclear sphere,” the publication quoted Admiral Tony Radakin, Chief of the Defence Staff of Great Britain.
The journalists added that there are already about 100 American B61 nuclear bombs deployed in Europe. They are stored at bases in Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey and Germany.
In addition, the Americans can drop about 150 more B61 nuclear bombs from F-35 fighters. But all of them are in the United States, the publication emphasized.
The United Kingdom and France are discussing the joint development of tactical nuclear weapons, the publication shared. The journalists noted that this is how European countries want to reduce their military dependence on the United States.
