The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution.
The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution on Russia's violations of human rights in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. There were 81 votes in favour, 14 against and 80 countries abstained.
The resolution became the first UN document that calls Russia's invasion of Ukraine an ‘annexation war against Ukraine’.
The document demands that Russia stop its annexation war and withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibyga said.
The Ukrainian foreign minister noted that the resolution particularly emphasises the brutal treatment and torture of captured Ukrainian military personnel by Russia, as well as the need to return deported Ukrainian children. ‘The international community stands firmly on the side of Ukraine and international law. Global support for Ukraine remains unwavering,’ the minister wrote.
Belarus, Burkina Faso, Burundi, China, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, Iran, Mali, Nicaragua, Niger, Russia, Sudan, Zimbabwe voted against the resolution.
