GSD: Russians Fleeing Damascus

The situation of the Russian military in Syria is deteriorating.

The Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Defence Ministry of Ukraine reported about the worsening situation for Russians in Syria.

Russians are fleeing Damascus, reports ‘Apostroph’ with reference to the Main Intelligence Department of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.

The intelligence reports about the advance of forces opposing the Russian-backed Assad regime in the south of the country:

‘Syrian deep six - the Russians are fleeing Damascus. The situation for Russians in Syria is getting worse. The forces opposing the Russian-backed Assad regime are actively moving to the south of the country, the first urban battles have taken place in the towns of Hama, Homs and Suweida’.

It is noted that ‘the military contingent of the aggressor state of Russia escaped from Hama and evacuated to the base Hmeimim.’ The head of the coordination headquarters of the Russians located in Hmeimimim, Colonel General Alexander Zhuravlev stated that the situation is out of the control of the Assad regime.

‘The first armed riots started in Damascus - Russian military personnel and diplomats started to leave the Syrian capital on an emergency and urgently. The Russians also fled the military base in the town of Khan Sheikhoun, leaving behind a significant arsenal of weapons and equipment,’ the report said.

On Sunday, December 1, Russian jets carried out airstrikes in areas of Khan Sheikhoun - the purpose of the attack was probably to destroy Russian military hardware that had been taken over by opposition forces.

‘Against the backdrop of the panic flight of Russian troops, the news about the resignation of the commander of the Russian contingent, General Kisel, was actively spread in Arabic-speaking blogs. Colonel Vadim Baikulov, who commanded a unit of Russian special forces, was also recalled to Moscow,’ the MID wrote.

They add that Baikulov should ‘explain to the leaders’ why his subordinate personnel suffered losses and military hardware was seized in Aleppo.
