Many Slovaks Consider Prime Minister Fico A Traitor
Robert Fico

The opposition criticizes the head of government for meeting with Putin.

On December 22, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico visited Moscow and met with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. According to Fico, in a 'lasting' conversation with Putin, they 'exchanged opinions on what is happening in Ukraine' and 'on relations between Slovakia and the Russian Federation', Polskie Radio reports.

The Slovak opposition party Freedom and Solidarity criticized Fico's meeting with Putin. Branislav Gröhling is its chair.

"We tell Vladimir Putin and all pro-Russian politicians that Robert Fico does not speak on behalf of the entire nation," Gröhling added.

In the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, people took to the streets to protest Fico's visit to the Russian Federation. The demonstrators held banners with slogans in support of Ukraine. One of the posters read: "Stop Putin!", another: "Smells Like Betrayal." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on Fico's visit to Putin. According to him, Moscow provides significant discounts to Fico, but Slovakia pays for them - with its sovereignty.
