Oil Depot Near Smolensk, Russia Catches Fire

The Russians reported a drone strike.

In the Smolensk region of the Russian Federation, a fire broke out at an oil depot in the city of Yartsevo after a drone attack at night on December 31. The regional authorities confirmed the emergency, but claimed that it was allegedly caused by debris from a downed drone, reports Obozrevatel.

In particular, the governor called on panic-stricken Russians to “keep calm”. At the same time, Russian publics continued to publish footage of the powerful “bavovna”.

After four in the morning local time, local residents reported that an oil depot in Yartsevo had been attacked. They filmed videos that also showed sparks flying around houses.

Head of the Yartsevo district Roman Zakharov confirmed the attack on the fuel and energy complex facility, which allegedly only resulted in a fuel spill and the ignition of flammable and lubricating materials.

“Emergency crews are working at the scene and are putting out the open flames. I ask everyone to remain calm and not to panic, I am at the scene,” the Russian official said.

For his part, Smolensk Region Governor Vasily Anokhin wrote at 04:50 that Russian air defense had repelled an attack by “Ukrainian UAVs”. According to him, “the debris from one of the drones fell on the territory of an oil depot.” He also assured the Russians, around whose houses sparks were flying, that “there is no threat to residential buildings” due to the fire.
