Maryna Zolatava Wins Freedom Of Speech Award In Germany
Maryna Zolatava

She showed extraordinary courage and honesty in her work.

The award ceremony for the international Johann Philipp Palm Prize for Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press was held in the German city of Schorndorf on December 1.

The 2024 laureates were the editor-in-chief of the TUT.BY portal destroyed by the Belarusian authorities, political prisoner Maryna Zolatava, and the ZanTimes media outlet, which writes about human rights in Afghanistan, DW reports.

The award is named after a German publisher who lived in the 19th century and was executed for his work. Every two years, it is awarded to independent journalists who have contributed to the development of democracy and an independent press.

The Johann Philipp Palm Foundation website notes that Zolatava faced brutal repression from the state, but demonstrated extraordinary courage and honesty in her work.

Maryna Zolatava has been in prison for three and a half years. The court sentenced her to 12 years in prison on a politically motivated charge.
