German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock hinted at the possibility of sending German soldiers to Ukraine. She said this ahead of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers, which will be held in Brussels on December 4.
According to BILD, Baerbock said that an ‘international presence may be needed to ensure a ceasefire’ in Ukraine.
Asked what role Germany would play in this, Baerbock said: ‘Only we Europeans can protect the peace.’
BILD reporter Peter Tiede speculated that judging by the minister's words, Germany, along with other EU countries, might send soldiers to Ukraine.
‘This is the first time a member of the German government has spoken out about what is seen as a possible part of a peace plan since Donald Trump's inauguration,’ the publication noted.
Last week, Bavarian Prime Minister and chairman of the CSU Markus Soeder said that preparations should be made for the possible creation of a ‘demilitarised zone that will eventually be guarded by Europeans’. He believes that ‘this will be a completely new challenge.’
