The military have been ordered to lay down their arms.
Syrian army commanders have told officers that dictator Bashar al-Assad's regime has fallen, Reuters reports, citing an unnamed Syrian officer.
According to two senior officers, Assad has left Damascus for an unknown destination. Meanwhile, rebels say they have entered the capital without encountering resistance from the army.
According to Flightradar, a Syrian Air Force plane took off from Damascus airport around the same time the rebels reportedly took over the capital, initially heading toward Syria's coastal region, but then making a sharp turn and flying in the opposite direction for several minutes before disappearing from the map.
It is not yet known who might have been on board.
Meanwhile, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said he was ready to support the continuity of government and was ready to cooperate with any leadership that the Syrian people choose.
Earlier, Syrian rebels said they had captured the capital Damascus and announced the fall of the Assad government.
