The US President-elect insists on an immediate ceasefire.
Donald Trump called for an immediate ceasefire and peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. The US President-elect published the corresponding statement on his social network Truth Social, commenting on the fall of the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
“Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer,” Trump wrote.
According to the President-elect, Russia lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, “where close to 600,000 Russian soldiers lay wounded or dead, in a war that should never have started, and could go on forever.”
Trump also noted that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky would like to make a deal and “stop the madness”. The President-elect clarified that they had lost 400,000 soldiers, and many more civilians. (These data are unofficial, there are very different estimates of military losses of the parties; the Russian and Ukrainian authorities themselves do not publish full information about these losses.)
“I know Vladimir (Putin — edit.) well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting!” Trump emphasized.
The day before, a meeting was held in Paris between the US President-elect, the Ukrainian President, and French President Emmanuel Macron. The conversation lasted about 35 minutes. There was no press conference to conclude the meeting. The presidents went to the opening ceremony of Notre Dame Cathedral, which had been restored after the fire.
