March 20, Attack on Engels

On the night of Wednesday, March 20, drones attacked the Engels in the Saratov Region of the Russian Federation.

The Russian telegram channel SHOT reported that from 2 to 4 loud explosions were heard over the city. According to eyewitnesses, "the windows were shaking."

Subsequently, sources confirmed to the Ukrainian media that the GUR was behind this attack.

"The planned GUR operation. Targets are hit. The results are being clarified," the Ukrainian intelligence said.

The Engels-2 Airbase

The Engels-2 Airbase of the Russian Air Force is located in Engels. The distance from this airfield to the nearest territory controlled by Ukraine is about 700 kilometers.

The Engels-2 is one of the largest and technically equipped air bases in the Russian Federation, in particular, it serves as a base for strategic bombers attacking targets in Ukraine, Tu-95MS.

In addition, it is the only one in Russia where Tu-160 strategic bombers are based.

Earlier, explosions were heard at this airbase. So, on December 5, 2022, two Tu-95MS were damaged as a result of explosions. The satellite images released later showed that the first aircraft of this type was lost (damaged or destroyed) in combat conditions. According to the Ministry of Defence, the airbase was attacked with the help of Tu-141 Strizh drones.

In addition, on December 26, 2022, explosions were also heard at the airbase. Then the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that this was a consequence of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation, and the enemy's Ministry of Defence announced the death of three and the wounding of four people. On December 29, 2022, explosions again thundered at the airfield.
