EU Rules Out Gas Negotiations With Russia

European officials will take the necessary measures to avoid Russian gas entirely.

The European Commission has no plans to get involved in any contacts with Russia to continue the transit of Russian gas to European countries through the Ukrainian GTS. This was stated by European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, Ukrinform reported on Monday, March 4.

"I have been very clear on this and delivered this message to our Ukrainian partners that the European Commission will not join the negotiations with Russia, as it did five years ago when the trilateral agreement on gas transit was signed. On the contrary, according to our RePowerUE plan, we must get rid of Russian gas by 2027 at the latest," she said before the start of the EU Council of Ministers' meeting on energy.

According to Simson, the European Commission is working intensively to provide countries with alternative supply routes and alternative suppliers, and at the same time to support Ukraine, to integrate it better into the EU energy market.
