China can’t “have its cake and eat it too".
In Beijing, a meeting was held between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, as a result of which politicians signed a number of documents on in-depth cooperation. The Chinese head of state made a statement that both countries consider the "political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis" to be the right way. The Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the United States Department of State Vedant Patel commented this, the Voice of America is citing his statement from the briefing.
"I saw something that looked like a joint statement on the results of this meeting, which spoke about concerns about the escalation, the desire for some kind of peace process or a political solution to the conflict in Ukraine. From our point of view, the solution is simple. The Russian Federation should just leave Ukraine, it can leave the territories in which it is in Ukraine, it can leave Crimea, and we will have a peaceful solution," Patel said.
He stressed that Russia and Putin himself again and again show that they are not interested in this. The representative of the US State Department noted that China cannot simultaneously strive to improve relations with other countries and fuel the Kremlin's military machine.
“China can’t have its cake and eat it too,” he said.
Patel assured that not only Washington, but also its partners from the G7, NATO and the European Union have such a position.
"The recharge of Russia's military capabilities by the People's Republic of China threatens not only the security of Ukraine, but also European security, and Beijing cannot achieve better relations with Europe by continuing to maintain something like this," the State Department speaker added.
