He was accused of fraud.
In Russia, the former commander of the 58th Army, Major General Ivan Popov, was arrested in a fraud case. Perhaps the case is connected with his speech against the former head of the Ministry of Defense Sergei Shoigu.
Security officials said that Popov sold about two thousand tons of metal products, which were intended for the construction of fortifications in the Zaporizhzhia direction (Popov led the defense there).
Popov was removed from command of the 58th Combined Arms Army of the Southern Military District of the Russian Armed Forces in July 2023. The military man explained that he was removed “for telling the truth” — in his words, he had to “either be a coward and tell the senior authorities what they wanted to hear, or call everything by their proper names and report the problems.”
Then Popov said that “Shoigu is a traitor.”
