Details.
The United States remembers the political prisoners who are “unjustly remain imprisoned” for “believing in a free and democratic Belarus”.
This is written in a statement by the US Embassy in Belarus, timed to coincide with the International Day of Solidarity with Belarusian Political Prisoners celebrated on May 21.
The US mission called on the Belarusian authorities to release all political prisoners.
It is worth noting that there are many more political prisoners in Belarus than the figure presented by human rights organizations. The Investigative Committee announced more than 10,000 protest-related criminal cases, which allows us to assess the real scale of repression.
Human rights activists are simply unable to count the number of political prisoners in Belarus, and there are many questions about the criteria they use in assessing the people who are being thrown behind bars today.
On May 21, we commemorate the Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners. But we remember them every day because every day they unjustly remain imprisoned for believing in a free and democratic Belarus.
