Lithuanian Customs Uncovered Scheme For Smuggling Trucks And Luxury Cars To Belarus

The operation was carried out at the Medininkai and Šalcininkai road posts.

A scheme to circumvent sanctions prohibiting the export of trucks and luxury cars to Belarus and Russia has been uncovered in Lithuania, the Press Service of the Lithuanian customs reports.

On June 18-19, a joint operation of the Criminal Customs Service and the Lithuanian Transport Security Administration was carried out at the Medininkai and Šalcininkai road posts. For violation of cargo transportation rules, 7 administrative cases were initiated. At the same time, according to customs officials, a scheme to circumvent EU sanctions was uncovered.

It turns out that truck tractors with semi-trailers registered in Lithuania go to Belarus and Russia supposedly to transport goods or go after them, but never return, probably simply having been re-registered abroad.

A similar situation is observed with luxury cars - it has been noticed that such vehicles are registered in their names by individuals who travel to the above-mentioned countries, but then do not return to Lithuania.

Lithuanian customs warn that the activities of such companies will be monitored. Soon, joint control measures will be strengthened at border posts, regular raids and detailed checks will be carried out.

For violation of the sanctions regime, Lithuanian legislation provides for a fine of 50 to 100% of the value of the goods and at least 10,000 euros for such violations of sanctions against legal entities.
