One NATO Country May Ask For Protection Under Article 5

The Alliance countries will have to respond.

One NATO country may ask for protection under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty due to Russia's hybrid operations and cyberattacks, Voice of America reports, citing a senior alliance official.

It is noted that he said this on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington, answering a question about what the alliance's reaction might be to Russia's hybrid operations and attempts to destabilize Europe.

“Ultimately, everything depends on what actions Russia will continue to take,” the official said. “For us, this is very clear, we know that in the cyber sphere, things can go beyond Article 5, as well as hybrid sabotage operations,” he said.

The official added that the Alliance member that suffers from hybrid attacks may ask for protection from its allies, but so far none of them has done so.

Each NATO member state bears additional responsibility and benefits from participation in the collective security system. Article 5 of the Alliance states that an armed attack on one or more NATO members will be considered an attack on all members. In the event of such an attack, countries undertake to provide assistance to the party or parties that have been attacked.
