NATO: We Are To Send Ukraine Invitation To Alliance

The final statement from the summit.

NATO will send Ukraine an invitation to join the Alliance when the allies agree and Kyiv fulfils all the necessary conditions.

This is reported in a joint statement at the end of the NATO summit.

"We reaffirm that we will be able to send Ukraine an invitation to join the Alliance when the Alliance members agree and the conditions are fulfilled," the statement said.

In addition, the leaders of the Alliance member states noted that Ukraine's future is in NATO and they support Ukraine's right to choose its own security mechanism and decide its future without external interference.

"Ukraine is becoming more operationally and politically integrated with the Alliance. We welcome the concrete progress Ukraine has made since the Vilnius Summit on the necessary democratic, economic and security reforms. As Ukraine continues this vital work, we will continue to support it on its irreversible path towards full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership," the statement said.

The Alliance added that the decisions of NATO and the Ukraine-NATO Council that were adopted at the summit, combined with the ongoing work of the Alliance members, are a bridge to Ukraine's membership in the Alliance.

"Alliance members will continue to support Ukraine's progress in interoperability, as well as the additional democracy and security sector reforms that NATO foreign ministers will continue to assess through the adapted Annual National Programme," the statement said.
