Sikorski: Several Thousand People Have Already Signed Up Ukrainian Legion In Poland

The head of the Polish Foreign Ministry said this at the NATO summit.

In Poland, a new volunteer military unit is being formed from Ukrainians who are ready to join the Ukrainian Defence Forces in the fight against the Russian aggressor. We are talking about the Ukrainian Legion, for which several thousand people have already signed up.

This was announced by Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski at the Public Forum in Washington, where the NATO summit is held. The words of the politician were quoted by the Interfax-Ukraine agency.

He explained that up to a million Ukrainians of both sexes live in the country, and it was from them that the first Ukrainian brigade of volunteers began to be formed. Several thousand of them have already registered to participate in such an appeal.

"Interestingly, many of them really want to serve and rotate their compatriots, but they say: we do not want to be sent into battle without being properly trained and equipped," Sikorski said.

He explained that this is why Poland will train and equip volunteers, and then they will be "provided to Ukraine" as a unit with the right to return to Poland after the rotation.

"If every European country did this, Ukraine would have several brigades," the Polish minister is convinced.

The creation of a volunteer legion in Poland with the possible participation of foreigners is provided for by the Agreement on Security Guarantees, recently signed between Kyiv and Warsaw.
