South Korea First In World To Use Laser Weapons

They call it the Star Wars project.

This year, South Korea will be the first in the world to deploy laser weapons for military use. It needs it to effectively combat North Korean drones.

According to Reuters, in December, five North Korean drones penetrated South Korea, which is technically still at war with Pyongyang, prompting Seoul to scramble fighter jets and attack helicopters and try to shoot them down.

According to the Arms Procurement Agency (DAPA), the program was called the Star Wars. The latest weapons were developed by the South Korean military in cooperation with Hanwha Aerospace.

The administration of the defence procurement program notes that these weapons are effective, quiet, invisible and cheap. One shot costs $1.45.

“Our country is becoming the first country in the world to deploy and operate laser weapons, and our military's ability to respond to North Korea's drone provocations will be further enhanced,” DAPA said.

The Agency is convinced that this weapon will change the rules of the game on the battlefield in the future. It knocks down drones, burning motors or other electrical equipment of drones with beams of light for 10-20 seconds.
