NYT: Some Biden Advisers Discuss How To Persuade Him To Withdraw His Candidacy
JOE BIDEN

They believe his chances of beating Trump are zero.

Individual longtime aides and advisers to US President Joe Biden have been trying to come up with ways to persuade the president to leave the campaign in recent days.

This was reported by The New York Times, citing three people informed on the matter.

A small group of Biden's advisers in the administration and on his campaign staff said they would have to convince the president of several things.

They said they have to prove to the president that he can't beat former President Donald Trump and convince him that another candidate, such as Vice President Kamala Harris, can win.

They must also reassure Biden that when he steps aside, the process of choosing another candidate will be orderly and not turn into chaos in the Democratic Party.

Among the biggest obstacles these people see is convincing Biden that he can't win. According to the source, the president told confidants before the failed debate on June 27 that he had a better chance of winning the election than Harris.

Those discussions were reported by three people familiar with the debates who spoke on condition of anonymity. So far, there is no indication that those conversations have reached Biden himself, one of the people interviewed said.

The White House denied that information. "That's definitely not true. ... President Biden's team strongly supports President Biden," said Andrew Bates, a White House spokesman.

T.J. Daclo, a spokesman for Biden's campaign, said the same thing about the president's political staff.

Those closest to the president - a group that includes some of his oldest advisers and family members - remain steadfast that Biden should stay in the race. One of the publication's sources said there is no such talk in Biden's inner circle.

Biden's staff agrees that it will take concrete numbers to convince him, particularly from the polls, showing that his support has dropped significantly.
