He is currently in a pretrial detention center.

Top basketball referee Aliaksandr Syrytsa was jailed back in January 2024, Euroradio reports.

The reason is the creation of a basketball chat. Syrytsa was detained when he was returning to Belarus. Aliaksandr is currently in a pretrial detention center.

He is accused of “insulting Lukashenka and creating an extremist group” (that same basketball chat).

According to journalists, Syrytsa's wife was also detained at the border and served an administrative arrest, while the chat participants were summoned for questioning.

Aliaksandr, who had been one of the best basketball referees in Belarus for many years, met the war in Ukraine in Kharkiv, where he was engaged in business. Since 2005, Syrytsa has been a FIBA referee.

In 2019, he and his colleagues sued (unsuccessfully) the basketball federation, after which he found himself out of favor. For business reasons, he also lived in Australia for a long time.
