Emergency Situation Declared In Homel Region

Many major towns are de-energised.

Homel region governor Ivan Krupko has announced a state of emergency after a devastating hurricane, which left the residents of the region without electricity and water.

As of Monday morning, Mazyr, Elsk, Kalinkavichy, Lelchytsy, Naroulia were still de-energised. Electricity supply to about 1,150 settlements has been damaged.

The Homel region head declared an emergency situation and organised an operational headquarters to coordinate actions to eliminate the consequences of the storm.

"Special services: power engineers, rescuers, foresters, housing and utilities, police continue to work in round-the-clock mode. Additional teams are being created to clear forest debris to provide power engineers with access to power lines as soon as possible. The population will be provided with drinking water in round-the-clock mode until the water supply is fully restored," summarised the head of the region.

Three people, including one child, were killed in the region because of the raging storm, four children and one adult were injured. 1150 settlements of the region remain without electricity.
