British Intelligence: Russia Is Forced To Raise Gas Prices For Population

To cover holes in the budget.

The UK intelligence community has analyzed the situation with gas prices in Russia and their rise since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

This is stated in the British Ministry of Defense intelligence review on July 15.

As indicated, Russia has increased domestic gas prices by 11.2% since July 1, which is almost certainly intended to increase revenues from the Russian domestic market in response to the loss of the European market.

This was a consequence of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, as well as a deliberate reduction in gas supplies to Europe in response, intelligence adds.

In 2023, Gazprom's net annual loss amounted to approximately $6.9 billion, which is the largest annual loss in the last 25 years, the department recalls.

The survey said inflation in Russia is likely to remain above the Russian Central Bank's target of 4% in the second half of 2024. This is partly due to rising domestic gas prices and other household expenses, as well as increased government spending, largely due to the invasion of Ukraine.

“Gas prices for Russian households are estimated to have increased by 34% since the invasion began, despite Russia being the world's second-largest natural gas producer in 2023. In 2025, they will grow by another 8.2%, which will almost certainly increase inflationary pressure in the Russian economy and weaken the purchasing power of ordinary Russians,” the intelligence agency notes.
