Ukraine Destroyed At Least 100 Tanks Russian Propaganda Claimed Were ‘World’s Best’

The T-90 “Proryv” turned out to be vulnerable.
Although, due to the colossal losses of military equipment in Ukraine, the Russian army had to send even tanks from the 1950s and 1960s to the front, and re-equip thousands of vehicles taken from warehouses; modern equipment also takes part in battles. And it is also destroyed in large quantities, despite the laudatory odes that Kremlin propagandists and Putin himself sing to it, writes The Moscow Times.
According to estimates by the Oryx website, Russia has lost a hundred of its leading tanks — the T-90M. Oryx only takes into account documented losses, meaning in reality the Russian army could have lost more than 100 of its most modern tanks participating in the war.
The cost of the tank, judging by the export contracts concluded by Russia, ranges from $2.5 million to 4.3 million (depending on the configuration). Thus, Putin’s army left $250-430 million in Ukrainian fields.
Vladimir Putin several times called the T-90M the best tank in the world.
June 2023 at a meeting with military officers:
“We need modern anti-tank weapons. Yes, and we need modern tanks. Now we can say that the T-90 “Proryv” is the best tank in the world. As soon as it takes a position, that’s it. No one can do anything about it. It's longer-ranged, more precise. And the security is better.”
February 2024 during a visit to Uralvagonzavod in Nizhny Tagil:
“T-90 “Proryv” is the best tank in the world. Without any exaggeration. And our guys, the tankers, say so. The enemy admits the same thing. The best vehicle in the world. We need to develop it, we need to think about new generations of technology.”
Propagandists love to praise the tank. Thus, the TV channel of the Ministry of Defense “Zvezda” has a section dedicated to it, where it talks about how the “invulnerable” “Proryv” destroys “Ukrainian militants”, “smashes apart” their control posts or “breaks through” the defense line:
“The tankers of the Eastern District are delighted with the newest combat vehicle. On the front line, they continue to test the T-90M’s strength, each time proving that their tank is one of the most reliable and invulnerable in the world,” they told in the story. “The crew of the T-90M “Proryv” tank thwarted an attempted militant attack with three shots” in August 2023. The active protection system is capable of deceiving the radar homing head of enemy assets, and the tank itself is “faster, more maneuverable, you can quickly get into position, shoot and hide.”
Despite all the technical innovations, 53 Proryvs were completely destroyed, according to Oryx data. At least 14 tanks were damaged (the moments of the attacks were recorded on video), 28 were damaged and abandoned. Another five went to the Ukrainian military, which does not have such tanks (the most modern model of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is the T-80).
Meanwhile, of the tanks provided by Western countries, the Ukrainian army lost only 51, according to Oryx. And this is far from the newest technology. Thus, the German Leopard 2A4 (the largest number of losses — 21) was produced from 1985 to 1992, the American M1A1 Abrams has been produced since 1980. The Ukrainian Armed Forces lost only one British Challenger 2 tank, which can be considered more modern (produced from 1994 to 2009).
Proryv was put into service in 2020.
In total, since the beginning of the war, Russia has lost 3,235 tanks, while Ukraine lost 865.
