Over PM Orbán’s ‘peace trips’.
Members of the European Parliament demanded Hungary’s EU voting rights be stripped after its Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s trips to Russia and China.
In a letter, 63 MEPs addressed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel and European Parliament chief Roberta Metsola, Politico writes with a reference to the document.
They noted that Orbán, during his visits to Russia and China, “purposefully misrepresented his empowerments” as a leader of the country which was given the Council of the EU presidency for half a year.
As a result, he, according to the MEPs, “has already caused significant damage by exploiting and abusing the role of the Council Presidency.”
“This requires real actions, such as suspending Hungary’s voting rights in the Council, since practice has shown that mere verbal condemnations of this situation have no effect,” the MEPs added.
POLITICO clarifies that the letter was drafted by MEPs from a number of parliamentary groups, including the European People's Party (EPP), Renew, and the Greens.
