Poland Announces Military Operation Near Belarusian Border

17,000 will take part there.

In Poland, from August 1, The Bezpieczne Podlasie ("Safe Podlasie") Operation will begin on the border with Belarus, which will involve about 17,000 troops.

This was stated by Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak Kamysz, quoted by RMF24.

At a press conference with the head of the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs Tomasz Siemoniak, Kosiniak-Kamysz assessed, among other things, that the decision to introduce a buffer zone on the border with Belarus has a positive effect – the number of attempts to cross the border and the crossings has decreased.

The 18th Mechanized Division will be responsible for the operation.

The Minister of Defence added that police officers, including those who took part in the mission in Kosovo, were sent to train soldiers at the border.

The Minister also assured that all those who in any way will offend the soldiers of the Polish army and officers who protect the Polish border will be responsible for this.

In turn, Siemoniak pointed out that the number of attempts to illegally cross the border has been halved.

Siemoniak said that together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, measures are being taken to ensure that citizens of the countries from which illegal migrants arrive realize that their planned crossing of the Polish-Belarusian border is a crime.

"We also constantly exert political pressure on Belarus to abandon this action," he added.
