Scholz Denies Zelensky's Request To Shoot Down Russian Missiles Over Ukraine

The German chancellor said that ‘there can be no talk of such steps’.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has rejected a request by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Western allies to shoot down Russian missiles and drones over Ukrainian territory with their weapons. This was reported by DW in the evening of Thursday, July 18.

At a press conference after the summit of the European political community in the British city of Woodstock, where Volodymyr Zelensky was invited, the head of the German government Scholz once again rejected the Ukrainian leader's request.

‘I observe such a consensus that such steps cannot be discussed. The US has a very clear position on this issue as well,’ Scholz said.

Zelensky took the opportunity to speak at the European Policy Community summit to urge Kyiv's allies to step up their support for its war on Russia, particularly by shooting down Russian missiles and drones over Ukrainian territory with their weapons. According to Zelensky, an Iranian attack on Israel in April using more than 300 missiles and drones was repelled with the participation of aircraft and air defence systems from the US, Britain and France.

Ukraine called on NATO countries to establish a no-fly zone over the country's territory as early as the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. The NATO alliance refused, promising to equip the Ukrainian army with air defence systems.
