Failure At Largest NPP Causes Power Outages In Southern Russia Third Day In Row

Power problems persist in the annexed Crimea.

The Rostov region has reintroduced power consumption restriction schedules after a failure at a nuclear power plant. This decision was made due to abnormal heat in the region and the risk of equipment overload.

“In order to prevent equipment failure and prevent an emergency in the power system of the South, in the power system of the Rostov region, within the framework of the legislation, at the command of JSC System Operator of the Unified Energy System, temporary power outage schedules for consumers have been put into effect,” JSC Donenergo reports on its Telegram channel.

They added that extreme heat above +39 degrees Celsius is prevailing in the Rostov region and the region’s power systems are experiencing significant loads. The company assured that when the electrical regimes are normalized, the supply to consumers will be immediately restored.

According to head of the Novocherkassk administration Yuri Lysenko, temporary restrictions on electricity supply will be introduced in two districts of the city. The schedule will be introduced in the Pervomaysky and Promyshlenny districts of the city.

Power supply problems also persist in the annexed Crimea. “Due to the abnormal heat and increased loads on the energy system of the South of Russia, as well as to maintain the stability of the energy infrastructure of the Republic of Crimea, a schedule of temporary restrictions on electricity consumption on the peninsula was introduced on July 19,” Krymenergo told RIA Novosti.

They specified that rolling blackouts will affect Simferopol, Yalta, Alushta, Yevpatoriya, Feodosia, Kerch, Saki, Sudak, as well as 14 districts of the regions.

Large-scale power supply problems have been ongoing for the third day since the failure at the Rostov Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) on July 16. Then the automatic system turned off one of the power units due to a malfunction in the NPP turbogenerator.

In addition to the Rostov Region and the Crimea, on July 17 and 18, restrictions were introduced in Dagestan, the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, and Kabardino-Balkaria. According to Deputy Minister of Energy Yevgeny Grabchak, after the accident at the NPP, about 2.5 million people in the southern regions of Russia were left without power. Among the reasons for the incident, the deputy minister named insufficient generation, the need to increase the flow from neighboring regions, and network overload.

The Rostov NPP is located near Volgodonsk. It consists of four power units. This is the largest station in the south of the country, its capacity is 4 GW. The facility is among the top 3 in terms of generation in Russia and provides electricity to the southern regions and the North Caucasus with a population of more than 26 million people. The third power unit of the NPP was taken out for scheduled maintenance on June 22. Power units #2 and #4 are operating in normal mode at a capacity of 1,700 MW.
