Thijs Reuten: Ukraine Will Ultimately Make European Union Stronger

A Dutch MEP has called for more aid to Kyiv.

To end the war, the West needs to give Ukraine more weapons to win the war against Russia. Because the more weapons Ukraine gets and the more effectively it can defend itself, including by striking military targets in Russia, the fewer civilian casualties there will be. This was stated in a commentary to Guildhall (translated by “Glavkom”) by Thijs Reuten, a member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats), a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

“I am tired of EU governments expressing condolences over the missile attack on Kyiv, while for months now we have been hearing Ukraine asking for specific defense systems that are in the European Union's storage facilities (...) The words that we will support Ukraine for as long as it takes are becoming empty words. They are no longer taken seriously. I have been saying for over a year that we need to stop saying “as long as it takes” and start saying “as soon as possible”. The more effectively Ukraine can defend itself by striking military targets in Russia where the attacks are coming from and securing its own skies with the aircraft that will be provided, the fewer the number of victims (among civilians — edit.) will be,” the politician said.

“To everyone who says that they want this war to stop because it is taking too many lives, I say that we must give Ukraine the weapons it needs to defend itself, to save lives. We need to protect Europe. We need to invest in European security, not because we want war, but because we want to prevent it (…) I believe that Ukraine will ultimately make the European Union stronger in the future, and will also become a security partner for us. But in order to find ourselves in such a situation, we need to give Ukraine the weapons it needs to win,” the MEP concluded.

Earlier, Romanian MEP and member of the Foreign Relations Committee Dragos Tudorache called for purchasing weapons for Ukraine while simultaneously investing in the EU military-industrial complex. In his opinion, the European Union's approach to arming Ukraine should include two directions — allocating funds for purchasing weapons on the world market and allocating funds for investment in increasing the production capacity of the EU military-industrial complex.
