Italy Offers $32 Thousand Dollars To Those Moving To Live In Tuscany

Belarusians can participate in the programme, but there is a nuance.

Officials of the Italian region of Tuscany have promised to pay from $11 to $32 thousand to those who wish to move there, but, as usual, there are "a couple of nuances" in the new state programme of "Residence in the Mountains".

In total, the programme has a budget of €2.8 million (or just over $3 million). Tuscan officials are willing to spend this amount to encourage people to move to the countryside. The money from the fund was promised to be given for purchasing a home in Tuscany and renovating a house. The grant can cover up to 50 per cent of renovation costs.

The key nuance of the programme is that the applicant must make the purchased property his main home, that is, to buy a house "as a summer house" in an Italian village in a region known for its romantic flair, dry red wine, medieval architecture and olive groves, will not work, reported Business Insider.

According to the authors of the programme, its aim is to "re-populate and socio-economically revitalise the mountainous areas" of Tuscany and "counteract the marginalisation" of the region. The programme involves 76 small Italian towns with populations of up to 5,000 people. They include San Casciano dei Bagni, famous for its thermal pools and Michelangelo's Caprese, the birthplace of the greatest Renaissance artist, as well as the picturesque island of Capraia Isola in the Tuscan archipelago.

According to a 2016 study by Italian government agencies, Italy has the lowest proportion of children under the age of 15 in Europe. The demographic crisis in Italy is so serious that almost 2,500 Italian cities are actually on the verge of extinction and will hardly last more than 25 years unless the situation changes dramatically.

In 2023, CNN reported that there are more than 6,000 ghost villages across Italy, emptied due to migration and natural disasters.

Can Belarusians Buy a House in the Italian Village?

According to the publication, not only Italians, but also residents of the EU and non-EU countries can count on grants to buy a house in Tuscany, but under a number of conditions. Firstly, only those foreigners who have a residence permit in Italy for at least 10 years can participate in the programme. Secondly, as mentioned earlier, applicants will be obliged to use the property acquired in Tuscany as their main place of residence.

Acceptance of applications for participation in the programme will close on July 27.

Note that this is not the first such programme by the Italian authorities. Since 2018, the authorities of various mountainous regions of Italy offered new residents to move to abandoned towns, and the houses were put up for sale at a symbolic price of 1 euro. This, according to Business Insider, attracted crowds of emigrants who flocked to the country and bought up abandoned properties.
