Powerful Hurricane Hits Russian St. Petersburg, Causing Trees And Cranes To Fall

Victims have been reported.

A powerful storm hit St. Petersburg the day before. By Monday evening, hurricane-force winds began tearing roofs off houses, knocking down trees and overturning cars. The gusty winds were so strong that they brought down one of the construction cranes in the Nevsky district of the city, which was caught on video. Lightning and torrential downpour worsened the situation, flooding roads with water.

Russian media report the partial destruction of several buildings. In several areas of the city, the storm kicked up huge amounts of dust and sand into the air, reducing visibility to zero.

Four deaths are known, including an 11-year-old schoolboy. In the morning, the entire city was littered with fallen trees, the wind gusts reached 30 miles per second. The hurricane knocked down almost 50 trees.

City authorities are trying to calculate the losses caused by the disaster to the city.
