Left Her Mark: What Known About Kamala Harris, Who Replaces Biden In Presidential Race

The new Democratic candidate has an unusual biography.

The Federal Election Commission of the United States has received notice of the nomination of the Vice-President of the country Kamala Harris. More than half of the senators from the Democratic Party of the United States have already supported the candidacy of the Vice-President of the country. The RBC-Ukraine website has collected the main facts from the biography of Kamala Harris, who will replace Joe Biden in the presidential race.

Daughter of Immigrants. Facts from Kamala Harris' Biography

Kamala Davy Harris was born in Oakland, California on October 20, 1964 in a family of scholars who immigrated to the United States from India and Jamaica.

Kamala's parents divorced when she was seven years old. At the age of 12, she moved to Canada with her mother and sister.

However, she returned to the States for her studies. She earned a bachelor's degree in economics and political science from Howard University in Washington, D.C. (considered traditionally African-American).

Subsequently studied at the University of California at Berkeley, where she defended herself as a Master of Laws.

Work in the Prosecutor's Office

Since 1990, Kamala Harris has worked in the Alameda County Prosecutor's Office in Oakland. In charge of cases involving sex offenses.

She next had a position in the San Francisco District Attorney's office. Specialized in teen prostitution. She got law enforcement agencies to treat underage prostitutes as crime victims and send them to rehabilitation centers instead of prison.

In 2003, Harris won election as San Francisco's district attorney. During her tenure, the overall felony punishment rate increased from 52% to 67%, which was the highest in a decade. Penalty rates for murder and drug trafficking also increased significantly.

Kamala Harris created a hate crimes task force to investigate hate crimes.

In 2010, Kamala Harris was elected California Attorney General. She became the first female prosecutor, Jamaican-American and Indian-American attorney general in California.

In that position, she initiated the implementation of an online platform that collected information on people killed and injured in police detentions.

Harris also succeeded in getting the federal government to increase subsidies for families who lost their homes due to the unfairness of lending institutions.

At the same time, the attorney general refused to support two bills to ban the death penalty in the state, which caused outrage from human rights activists.

Making History. Harris' Career Path in Politics

In parallel with the work in the Prosecutor General's office, Kamala Harris developed a political career. In 2016, she won the race for the chair of the senator from the state of California.

She actively appeared on television, sharply spoke out against the harsh policy at the time of President Donald Trump regarding migrants. She opposed Trump's nominations for the posts of Secretary of Education and Attorney General of the United States, supported the right to abortion and legalizing same-sex marriage. Also advocated for legalizing cannabis at the federal level.

She served as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Intelligence, Budget, and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees.

In 2019, Kamala Harris announced her running for president. She was briefly among the leaders of the Democratic Party primaries, but ultimately failed to maintain that popularity, withdrawing from the election and endorsing Joe Biden's candidacy.

During the campaign, Biden nominated Harris for vice president - in fact, the second person in the White House.

On January 20, 2021, at the inauguration of Joe Biden as President of the United States, Kamala Harris also took the oath of office and assumed the office of Vice President of the United States.

Thus, in the second most important position in the United States, she became not only the first woman, but also the first non-white representative of America.

What Kamala Harris Said About Ukraine

The Vice President of the United States spoke in favor of Ukraine back during the 2020 election campaign. Back then, Kamala Harris condemned Russian aggression and the occupation of Crimea.

“Russia's illegal occupation of Crimea is a flagrant violation of the international norms the world has been moving by since World War II, as well as Russia's support for combat operations in eastern Ukraine and cyberattacks,” she noted.

After Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2024, Harris said people in Ukraine are not only defending their families and homes, but also fighting for freedom.

“The attention of the whole world is focused on the Ukrainians. They are fighting not only to defend their homes and families, but also to defend their democracy, freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity. And they will win,” the politician wrote on X social network.

Harris was critical of the situation in the U.S. Congress regarding the delay of military aid to Ukraine: “When we talk about America's role in supporting Ukraine - we must be unwavering and cannot afford to play political games. There is no room for them right now.”

The vice president said the failure of U.S. aid to Ukraine would be a “gift to Putin.”

“History proves that when we don't react, when an aggressor invades his neighbor with impunity - he will keep on going. And in Putin's case, that means all of Europe will be at risk,” she explained at the Munich Security Conference in February 2024.

Kamala Harris represented the U.S. at the Peace Summit in Switzerland in June of this year. During her speech, the vice president expressed her opinion on the Kremlin's conditions for “ending the war.”

She said that Russia's actions, if not punished, “will encourage other aggressors and lead to the possibility of a war of conquest and chaos rather than order and stability - which threatens the entire world.”

“We need to tell the truth: Putin is not calling for negotiations, but for surrender. The US supports Ukraine,” Harris said.
