German MFA Comments On Rico Krieger's Case: He Is Sentenced To Death In Belarus

The German Foreign Ministry is working on the case of Rico Krieger, who was sentenced to death in Belarus.

The representative of the department, Christian Wagner, said that Krieger had been provided with consular assistance from the very beginning, writes Deutsche Welle.

"We are dealing with his fate and from the very beginning we have been providing him with intensive consular support. We are also actively defending his interests before the Belarusian authorities," Wagner said.

The representative of the German Foreign Ministry did not provide any details. In addition, he evaded answering the question about possible proposals of Minsk on the fate of Krieger.

“You will have to be patient in this regard. As I said, our priority is comprehensive support,” he added.

According to Wagner, despite the non-recognition of Aliakasandr Lukashenka as the elected president, Berlin maintains diplomatic relations with Belarus.

"We have an embassy in Minsk, it is operating and working. This consular support is carried out on site. As I said, I won't go into details. I can answer in general, which usually includes consular assistance: contacts with the detainee, contacts with family members, lawyers, visits to prisons and discussion of detention conditions with the authorities, "Wagner explained.
