Bloomberg: Poland Felt Lukashenka's Strategic Vulnerability

Details of the meeting between Duda and Xi Jinping became known.

According to Bloomberg sources, the Polish side threatened China with the termination of the railway transit of its goods through Belarus to Europe, if Beijing does not influence the Lukashenka regime on the issue of illegal migration on the Polish-Belarusian border.

Thus, Poland found the strategic vulnerability of both China and the Lukashenka regime, since after the negotiations the flow of migrants on the border decreased sharply, the agency reports.

Due to the war in Ukraine, Belarus became the only main railway route for Chinese goods to the European Union, which strengthened its transit role, especially against the background of instability in the Red Sea due to Houthi attacks. This circumstance gave Lukashenka the opportunity to partially compensate for Belarus' dependence on Russia in the field of energy and finance.

According to Bloomberg, in the first quarter of 2024, the volume of container traffic from China through Belarus increased by 89%.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in an interview with the agency noted that Poland continues to use the threat of closing transit to put pressure on Minsk, especially after the incident with the murder of a Polish soldier at the border.

In response, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that he hoped to resolve the Polish-Belarusian disagreements through dialogue, which would ensure the security and uninterruptedness of international logistics routes.
