Political Scientist: Lukashenka Will Have Unpleasant Conversations At SCO Summit

The ruler received absolutely clear signals.

Lukashenka is flying to the SCO summit in Astana, where Belarus’ accession to this organization will be officially announced. Why was the dictator so eager to join the SCO? Charter97.org website talked about this with Belarusian political scientist Anatol Kotau:

— Lukashenka is now solving a problem that he created for himself with this organization. After the creation of the SCO, the doors were actually open for Belarus, they were even invited. But Lukashenka then decided that this was not interesting, because initially the SCO was about “talking”, not about money. He is not interested in any organization where there is no way to get funding for anything.

Now this organization looks somewhat different, since the main violin in it is openly played by China, which is promoting the implementation of the grandiose “One Belt, One Road” project, which implies investments, including financial ones, in infrastructure. Therefore, Belarus has been knocking there for more than five years to gain full membership.

This summit will be quite difficult for Lukashenka, despite the positive decision that may be announced at this event. The whole atmosphere is spoiled by the fact that, in fact, over the last week and a half, Lukashenka has received very clear signals from Warsaw, Beijing and even Berlin that he is creating a problem in this way. This is a migration crisis, this is, in general, the entire unstable situation in Belarus, which threatens that actual transit through Belarus will be jeopardized. Accordingly, Lukashenka will face such rather unpleasant negotiations with key players in order to normalize the situation.

— Will Xi Jinping put pressure on Lukashenka at the summit?

— The Chinese don’t put pressure, they just say that the issue needs to be resolved.
