Political Scientist: Orban Could Have Delivered Trump's Message To Zelensky

Is the former US president really in talks with Putin?

Politico writes that Donald Trump is already negotiating with Putin to end the war in Ukraine.

Can there really be such contacts? Charter97.org asked political expert Oleksandr Musienko, the head of the Ukrainian Center for Military and Legal Studies, to comment on this:

— I think there may be some contacts. Please note, Trump said at the debate with Biden that he has a plan, and he will end this war even before the inauguration.

The publication in Politico logically complements the information that such negotiations can already be conducted through certain channels and through certain persons. The parameters of some future transactions are discussed.

I do not exclude that Orbán could also pass some messages and conditions to President Zelensky, given his proximity to Trump and his entourage. I think that now all this has intensified for a reason.

Earlier in the media there was a publication citing two Trump advisers that they are considering the possibility of negotiations with the Russian Federation on the principle: "we will give Ukraine more weapons if the Russian Federation does not agree", "we will give less if Putin agrees". Very simple configuration.

In general, this can be discussed, which is highly undesirable, since Ukraine does not welcome any discussions and contacts behind the back of the Ukrainian leadership. I would like the Ukrainian side to be heard, to see those initiatives (from the Peace Summit to the proposals of President Zelensky) that come from the norms of the international plan.

— Let's imagine that Trump becomes the president of the United States. How could the events develop?

— The peculiarity of Trump is that, firstly, he is an isolationist now even more than he was. He is increasingly convinced that America must address domestic issues. Trump surrounds himself with such people.

In addition, he is quite serious about the voter who believes that the United States is already doing too much for Ukraine, and there are, let's be frank, among right-wing and right-wing conservatives.

This is not only a question of Ukraine, but also of the whole of Europe, since Trump will still pay less attention to its issues.

But I would not say that Trump will be ready to accept all Putin's conditions, saying, "everything you want". Trump will look for a compromise, an agreement that can suit both Russia and Ukraine. The question is where is the limit of this compromise.

I also note that the huge disadvantage of the whole situation is that Trump is unpredictable. I see two options for how he can act: he can say that Biden and his administration behaved incorrectly, and gave Ukraine very few weapons. We will give more. This will cause shock and confusion, and Trump likes such unexpected attacks.

Or he may say, enough, let's end the war with any options: Ukraine is not in NATO, neutral, the Russian Federation controls certain territories and so on. It's hard to say for sure now. As long as Trump is not the president, it is not clear who will be in his team, which is also extremely important.
